Each of us is somewhat like a butterfly. When we start out we are just learning to crawl around this place and we sometimes try to hide in a cocoon away from the world. At some point we grow strong enough to break out of our hiding place and find out who we really are. The creepy caterpillars become hidden away from the world and eventually emerge to become beautiful creatures that can fly away and be free. Too bad the average lifespan of a butterfly is only two weeks. I hope we can all come out of our hiding places and enjoy the world around us. Maybe some of us won't develop into our true selves until the next life. I guess time will tell. I know Mom really wants her wings so she can fly away to all the places she wants to see. I hope some day she will get her wish, but for now, she will have to be content to live with us caterpillars here on Earth. We had a boy in preschool bring in some cocooned caterpillars and last Thursday and Friday we had them emerge and we got to watch as they learned to fly. It was really cool. today we let them out of their cage and one immediately flew as far away as it could go. The other one was a little slower so I managed to get a picture. I know it could be better, but I didn't have much time to get the picture with 11 preschoolers trying to chase it down - we had to work to protect this one. Anyway, it was fun to see it finally fly away.
It will be great when we can all fly as high as we can fly. Did you ever think that a robin can fly wherever it wants to, even inside of prison walls and back out again. Everyone likes robins and they sing very nice. I didn't realize that a butterfly had such a short lifespan. That is sad to have something so beautiful and last such a short time.
